Husband-and-wife academics travelled from Cambridge to Caithness with their family to find out about the history of Wick at the town's heritage museum.

Volunteers at the museum in Bank Row were delighted to welcome Dr Simon Stoddart, a reader in prehistory at the University of Cambridge, and his wife Caroline Malone, professor of prehistory at the Queen's University Belfast.

Dr Stoddart's research interests include Iron Age Europe and island societies. Prof Malone's research interests include Neolithic and Copper Age societies of Britain and Europe. Prof Malone was keeper of the Department of Prehistory and Early Europe at the British Museum.

Museum volunteer Eswyl Fell said: "Both were very friendly, and visited along with their two children and two dogs.

"They loved the museum, which they had travelled to from Cambridge especially to visit, and were interested in the history of the town and the Thomas Telford influence in its architecture."
