Two zebra crossings in Wick have earned their stripes – after going for nine months without any white markings.

The crossings, in close proximity near the junction of Thurso Road and Bankhead Road, had been left unmarked since resurfacing work was carried out last June.

The matter had been causing concern to the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council and in particular its treasurer, Joanna Coghill.

However, the local authority announced that lining work was completed on Thursday. A Highland Council spokesperson said: “We are pleased to confirm that the line painting work at these crossings is now complete."

Earlier this month, Mrs Coghill had questioned the legal status of the stripeless crossings.

At the community council's October meeting, Mrs Coghill said she was worried that someone could be hurt and her exasperation was clear as she declared: "If they give me a pot of paint I'll go and do it myself."

Now that the stripes have been added at last, she said: "It has finally happened. About time!

"It'll be interesting to find out why it took so long."
