A winning calendar from the Fish Mish
A charity with a base in Scrabster thinks its new calendar for 2022 will sail off the shelves.
The Fishermen’s Mission calendar, "When the boat comes in – British fishing lives through the year", is now ready to buy and the charity says it is delighted with how it looks.
The Mission held a competition earlier this year which resulted in supporters old and new submitting entries of either artwork or a fish recipe based on a season of the year. Hundreds of entries poured in and after weeks of decision making, the winners and runners-up have been selected to make up the calendar. Alongside the competition winners, the calendar features artwork from actresses Sophie Thompson and Caroline Quentin whilst food blogger and recipe maker Marlena Razali donated a Malaysian Salmon curry recipe (Instagram @girlseatin).
Jackie Dodds from the Fishermen’s Mission based at Scrabster spoke about how the calendar idea came together: “We have a gifted volunteer, Graham Young, who often worked into the small hours poring over images to design Calendar Gills, our truly amazing 2021 calendar.
"That was hugely successful and raised thousands of pounds. This year, together with Graham, we asked our supporters to help. The calendar looks beautiful and we hope it will be another successful fundraiser.”
The Fishermen’s Mission is striving forward with "great excitement" in this, their 140th anniversary year. The charity is reliant on donations which are especially vital now.
Jackie added: “Fundraising for our work has been difficult throughout the pandemic. The simple fact is that without funding our crucial role of caring for our fishermen and their families will end.
"Our work is based on building trusted relationships through face-to- face meetings on the quayside, on fishing vessels and through home visits. We are sure that people will love our 2022 calendar, and every copy sold will bring hope to a fisherman needing our help.”
