A unique take on Stroma’s fortunes
IT is rare for three artists in different disciplines to come together to capture a moment in time.
However, this is what has happened to produce Stroma – a unique collection of photography from renowned Scottish snapper Roddy Ritchie; an "Ode to Stroma" by local playwright and poet George Gunn; and a thought-provoking and optimistic assessment of the island’s past, present and future from Ali Murray, whose unique insights are well known from his previous book, On The Trail of the Real Macbeth, King of Alba.
The book, published by the Islands Book Trust as part of its Living History series, is due to be launched on Tuesday, June 14, at Caithness Horizons in Thurso.
Known to the Vikings as "the island in the stream", Stroma had been inhabited for over 5000 years until the last residents departed in 1962.
Seven of those who left give their impressions and memories of their lives in the book.

This volume of photographs, poetry and prose offers an alternative and imaginative look at Stroma’s present and possible future. It ponders whether, with the strong ebb and flow tides which swirl around its shores daily offering a potential renewable energy renaissance in the island’s economic fortunes, the island will again become a community.
The launch will take place at 5.30pm.
