A question of cash as quiz-goers support children’s projects
THE second fundraising venture for the North of Scotland Newspapers Charity of the Year was another success – raising just under £250 for three children’s projects in Caithness.
A pub quiz in the Nethercliffe Hotel in Wick on Friday, June 10, proved popular with the locals, who came out to test their knowledge and to help raise money for the organisations which will benefit from the cash – Thrumster Park Regeneration Fund, Keiss Family Community Project and Thurso Youth FC.
Thanks to the hard work of the groups involved and the generosity of members of the public, the charity bank balance stands at just over £2300 after two events.
A total of 10 teams showed up at the Nethercliffe to support the first in a series of NOSN Charity of the Year quizzes.
After eight rounds covering a variety of subjects, the most puzzling being the “Far’s ’at in Week” photo round, two teams at opposite ends of the hall were within touching distance of being declared the winner.

After a tense final round the Groat not Groats team came in first with an excellent score of 74 points out of a possible 91. Close behind and claiming second place were the Halfwits with a score of 71.5.
A group of fundraisers from the Thrumster Park Regeneration Fund sat at the bottom of the list but members were consoled by the amount raised, some of which will be used to get their local park back on track.
Prizes donated by local off-licence Bin Ends were given to the two top teams.

NOSN advertisement manager Sheona Campbell said that she hoped everyone had an enjoyable night.
“I hope the quizzers enjoyed it as much as the organisers did. We had a super night and are very grateful to the sponsors, Bin Ends, Wick and Thurso, for agreeing to sponsor the team prizes for the rest of the quiz nights planned until the end of the year,” she said.
“Helen and Mervyn Hill were really helpful and everyone was very appreciative of the supper they provided.”
A sponsored walk held during the Easter weekend has already raised over £2000 for the NOSN Charity of the Year initiative, thanks to the generous support of members of the public and the organisation of the groups who will benefit from the cash.
Sheona said she hopes to see a few new faces at the next quiz who will dig deep for the three community projects.
