MY HOPES FOR 2022: Councillor Karl Rosie, Thurso and Northwest Caithness

Mental health support and climate action will be among the priorities for Highland councillor Karl Rosie in the coming 12 months.

"The events of the past two years reinforce that a positive, can-do, solution-focused mindset is essential if we are going to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and prosper as a community," he said.

Councillor Rosie, who represents Thurso and Northwest Caithness on Highland Council, went on: "I firmly believe that we have an advantage in that we had already initiated the redesign of our health and social care in Caithness.

"There is a huge amount of work and effort ongoing with the development of an outline business case and detailed service model for the redesign of the 141 services being provided in Caithness and how those may be improved or adapted with agencies, third-party and voluntary involvement.

"The establishment of Caithness Pathfinder to address the issues of mental health, drug and alcohol addiction issues has similarly evolved and developed to become Caithness Cares – a community partnership in every sense that is now focused with so many useful partnerships exploring and delivering meaningful outcomes that can be built on.

"The recent consultation of S4 and S5 secondary pupils in Caithness and at three other secondary schools in the Highlands on what is known as the Icelandic model will, I hope, make that generation feel engaged and inspired to determine what is required for them to choose a long-term future in the Highlands.

"Finally, it is exciting that we can contribute so much as individuals to tackle climate change. Galvanising that into a wider response is key to realising the required climate actions.

"Thurso Community Development Trust being chosen to set up a regional climate action hub for the north Highlands and Islands provides a great deal of hope that we can empower communities to transition to low-carbon living while also becoming more resilient."
