A day of fun and science as successful festival draws to a close

THOUSANDS of people descended upon Wick’s community campus on Saturday for the finale of the Caithness International Science Festival (CISF) 2019.

The fun day lived up to its name and witnessed young and old join together in a celebration of science and technology.

Amanda Coghill, the administrator for the festival, said: “It went really well and people were getting hands-on with lots of activities. We had Laura Rennie with her Animal Magic show which has proved to be really popular once again.”

Ms Coghill highlighted some of the special events of the science festival including two presentations at the Assembly Rooms on Friday evening to a capacity audience.

Professor Iain Baikie hosted the slide-show lectures by Willie Watt and former police detective Gary Flannigan.

Mr Watt took the audience on an in-depth journey through the story of Wick harbour from the past into the present and beyond.

Mr Flannigan’s talk was about the forensic detective work he did and he showed how science helped solve crimes.

Prof Baikie said he was delighted by the increasing popularity of the festival. “We’ve had a fantastic turnout and great interaction with the public,” he said.

He also noted that the record numbers coming through the doors at the campus with close to 1200 people in the first hour alone.

A number of events ran inside and outside the campus with fire engines, tractors and vintage cars welcoming the public at the entrance and everything from robots solving Rubik’s cubes to broch-building advice inside the main hall.
