A child could have been killed when car wrecked my wall

SIR – Could I appeal through your paper to the person who hit my front wall (or to anyone who knows who it was, and I am pretty sure there are some) on Monday, September 5, just after 8pm in Barrock, to examine their conscience? They drove off at speed and nothing has been heard from them.

I’m old, I had a shock when I heard the bang and saw the damage. I have also been left to pay for the wall to be rebuilt (insurance claim isn’t an option with today’s penalties and excess charges).

But that is nothing compared with the greater worry that a child could have been killed.

The children in the village have been taught, quite rightly, to walk close to the walls if they hear vehicles approaching and even to stand still against the walls until vehicles have passed. Imagine what would have happened if they had been standing there on Monday.

I could also have been working in the garden. In fact, any innocent person could have been walking past when this vehicle went out of control.

There was a campaign for a speed limit through the village but it was not successful. I think it is time for reconsideration – do we always have to wait for someone to be killed before action is taken?

I can only hope that the person who did this will think carefully in future and rectify whatever the problem was that caused this accident and made them then hide their responsibility; and reflect on how they would be feeling now had they killed a child.

They may very well be having a laugh with mates about “getting away with it” – if so, I hope that one day they will remember and regret. Thank you to the local police for their considerate help and Councillor Mackay for his back-up.

Joan Miller,

1 Coopers Cottages,

Barrock.
