A WATTEN resident has spoken of his shock at hearing an 85ft tree crash into his garden during last night’s severe gales.

Gordon MacFarlane, of Thor’s House, Banks Road, spoke of a thunderous thud at the back of his home with winds howling at over 80 mph.

The ash tree, which was estimated to be over 100 years old and measured 85ft in height, could not withstand the severe gales.

Mr MacFarlane said he had never been so amazed by what he saw in his life.

"I did put in my Christmas wish list that I wanted some firewood, but this is just ridiculous," he joked.

"We were sitting in the house when we heard this crashing sound at around 8pm – we couldn’t believe what we were looking at."

Neighbours have rallied around Mr MacFarlane to help him cut down the tree and remove it from his garden.

It did not cause any structural damage to his property, but a 60ft pine tree in his garden also blew on to Banks Road which police closed off to traffic.
