Gales are set to batter communities around the Pentland Firth on Saturday, the Met Office has warned.

Meteorologists have issued a yellow weather warning for winds of up to 70mph over the Northern Isles and Pentland Firth, with Caithness expected to face blustery weather.

The alert comes into force on Saturday morning at 7am and will remain in place until 11am.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Winds will increase quickly towards dawn Saturday across the Northern Isles with gusts generally reaching 50-60 mph but with a smaller chance of 70 mph gusts. Winds will quickly ease from late morning."
