4 months of disruption expected during Thurso sewer repairs warns Scottish Water
Four months of disruption is expected when permanent repairs to a deteriorating sewer are carried out under the pier at Thurso Harbour, Scottish Water has warned.
Preparations to repair the sewer will begin on Monday (June 3), when contactors begin to set up on site, before the work gets under way the following week. It is expected to continue “until October”.
Scottish Water has warned that during the works the pier itself “will be cordoned off and there will be single lane traffic in operation on Riverside Road”.
And there will be a four-week window while “lining of the pipe is being carried out” where the project will require a temporary sewer pipe to run above ground along part of Riverside Road.
Describing the overall repair, project manager Tom Hannan said: “It is essential that we complete this work to ensure the sewer network can continue to serve customers in the local area and protect the environment.

“We know this is a well-used area of the town and our team will do all they can to minimise any disruption caused by the work. We would like to thank residents and road users in advance for their understanding and patience while we complete these repairs.”
The full repair programme will involve lining the inside of the existing pipe and the replacement of some of the metal cross beams currently securing it to the pier. New metal cross beams will also be installed above the pipe to “further secure it” to the pier.
Resurfacing work along Riverside Road will also take place at the end of the project in October following investigatory work that was carried out regarding the possible relocation of the sewer.
