A FUNDING package of £220,000 has been awarded towards an improvement project at Berriedale Braes.

The money – £100,000 from Transport Scotland, £100,000 from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and £10,000 each from the Highland Council and HITRANS – will be used to progress an improvement scheme at that section of the A9 road.

Under the plan the north hairpin would be removed and the existing road would be realigned within the corridor between the cemetery and the coastal cliff.

The funding package has been welcomed by local campaigners and politicians.

John Green, chairman of Caithness Transport Forum, described the funding as “good news”.

“We are quite delighted to be getting this money in times of austerity. Hopefully, the scheme will be done in the next couple of years.

“It is very encouraging and could be the catalyst for further improvements, including the stretch of road from Berriedale to Wick,” said Mr Green.
