A pair of railway stations in Caithness and Sutherland are among the 10 least used in the whole of Great Britain, new figures have revealed.

The Office of Rail and Road has released figures for all stations over the period between April 1 last year and March 31, 2023.

And Scotscalder (seventh least used) and Kildonan (10th) were among the 10 quietest on the entire rail network.

Scotscalder saw 124 passengers alight or embark trains over that period, with Kildonan recording 148.

More transport news.

There are almost 2600 stations across the network.

The quietest in the UK was Teesside Airport, with just two.

Several other Highland stations were also just outside the top 10 least used stations.

These included the Kyle Line's Lochluichart (12th place, 182 passengers), the Far North Line's Invershin (16th, 232 passengers) and Altnabreac (17th, 280 passengers), as well as the Kyle's Achanalt station (18th, 282 passengers) and Far North's Culrain (20th, 304 passengers).

The figures were recorded only up to April 1 this year, so the temporary closure of Altnabreac did not factor into its position on the list.
