A DROP-in event held at Thrumster village hall saw £1300 distributed to good causes thanks to the votes of local residents.

People were encouraged to attend the session organised by Tannach and District Community Council and cast their votes to decide who would be the winners after three wind farm community funds clubbed together to offer prizes.

Caithness Community Connections garnered most votes and took the first prize of £500, provided by Gresham House’s Wathegar Wind Farm, which will go towards Thrumster Youth Club’s running costs.

Thrumster SWI scooped up the second prize of £300 from the Wathegar 2 Community Fund, which will allow the group to buy additional craft supplies, while the E.ON Camster Community Fund provided awards of £100 to Yarrows Heritage Trust, Stirkoke Rifle Club, Befriending Caithness, Home-Start Caithness and Thrumster Game Fair.

Eilidh Coll, who works for Foundation Scotland, said: “The drop-in event was about more than just distributing funds to the groups – it was about trying to bring new people into a conversation about community development activity.”

She continued: “The Tannach Community Fund Panel needs new volunteers to keep it going, and with the threat that the community council could go into abeyance it’s important to try to interest new people to make sure new projects and opportunities are taken forward.”

Any local residents who would like to become involved in the panel should can contact Eilidh on 07801 530218 or eilidh@foundationscotland.org
