1100 homes in Caithness lose power

WICK was brought to a standstill on Friday afternoon when over a thousand homes and businesses lost power.

The loss of power occured at 4.25pm when an electricity outage caused 1100 customers to experience a loss of electricity.

The blackout affected businesses and banks which were forced to close early.

Cash ATM services were unavailable to use due to the loss of power.

Traffic lights also switched off as a result of the power cut which caused confusion for motorists in Wick Town Centre.

Caithness General Hospital also reported an electricity shortage, but their emergency generator switched on immediately afterwards.

A spokeswoman for Scottish and Southern Electric said that engineers restored electricity to the majority of homes at 5pm.

The company are currently investigating the cause of the power outage.
