Young Scorries show character to extend winning run
Wick Academy made it 12 wins from 12 in SHFL Under 18 North with a 4-2 victory against a good Dingwall side who made them work hard for the three points.
The young Scorries started brightly in Sunday’s match, moving the ball around well on the newly laid all-weather pitch at Dingwall Academy. The home side were defending well until the half-hour mark when Arran Bain glided down the left-hand side and delivered a cross that was headed in by Josh Sutherland.
The second half started in much the same fashion, with Wick parked in Dingwall’s half. However, in the 55th minute a long clearance by Dingwall wasn’t dealt with by the Wick defence and Seamus Henderson ran through to smash the ball past Jack Ross.
George Ewing found space on the edge of the box and fired Wick into a 2-1 lead on the hour mark. With 70 minutes gone, another long ball wasn’t dealt with and Lewis Pocock ran through to slide in a second equaliser.
The young Scorries continued to press hard. In the 80th minute Ewing slid the ball through to Jayden Bremner, who calmly slotted it home.
In injury time Bremner was cleaned out in the box. He dusted himself down and scored from the penalty spot.
Academy are second in the table with full points from their 12 fixtures. They are on the same points tally as leaders Balloan Thistle with a game in hand.
Coach Derek Shearer said: “We played very well in difficult conditions. Dingwall are a good side and made us fight very hard for our win.
“We showed character after twice being hauled back to level terms. The boys showed that they want to win every game and kept pushing and eventually got what they deserved.
“I can’t praise them highly enough, being halfway through the season on maximum points.”
