Wick Academy got off to great start in the SHFL Under-18 North League, running out 10-1 winners away to Rothes in their first game for more than 20 months.

Academy started strongly and took the lead through a Tomas Pearson header from Liam Bain's corner. The young Scorries squandered numerous chances before Rothes equalised with a deflected shot.

William Cannop restored Academy’s lead and added a third shortly after. Conor Farquhar got another to put Wick 4-1 up at half-time.

The second half began with wave after wave of Academy attacks and Alan Mathieson added a fifth with a fine finish. Bain scored the sixth, finishing off a swift one-touch move.

Bain added two more to complete his hat-trick. Farquhar added another with a great strike, then completed his treble with a penalty late on.

Coach Derek Shearer said: “It was great to get the lads back playing after such a long spell without any games. I thought we played some terrific football and created lots of chances.

"The scoreline reflects our dominance and will help us grow in confidence going into our next game at home to Ullapool."

The Ullapool fixture is scheduled for Sunday, September 5, at Harmsworth Park (noon kick-off).
