THE Lybster Open, sponsored by Scrabster Seafoods Ltd, was held last Saturday in excellent weather.

The winner of the scratch prize was Lybster member David Nicolson with a 64, winning by the better inward half from Alistair Young, also of the village club. This was an excellent performance by Alistair, who had a hole in one at the 15th, as it was his first competitive round this year.

Other notable scratch scores were returned by Alan Forbes (Lybster) with 65, Eric Larnach (Lybster) 66, John Hunter (Wick) 67 and David Dunbar (Thurso) 68.

The handicap section one was won by Alan Kennedy (Thurso) with 71 (13) 58, with Stanley Ross (Thurso) runner-up with 71 (12) 59. Other good scores were Alan Forbes (L) 65 (5) 60 and S. Place (W) 70 (9) 61.

Handicap section two was won by Richard Thain (L) with 73 (15) 58 while Ramsay Mackay (L) came home with 79 (20) 59. Other notable scores included Dave Irvine (T) 77 (17) 60, M. Ross (T) 77 (16) 61 and Bob Kirk (L) 75 (14) 61.

The previous week the club championship was contested. The quarter-final matches saw John Gunn v Dan Miller, Alan Larnach v Alistair Boyd, Eric Larnach v Murray Smythe and David Nicolson v Alan Forbes.

The first semi-final was contested between John and David, with David winning a very closely fought match one up.

The second semi saw a father-son match between Eric and Alan, with Eric’s experience coming out on top.

The final, played on a blustery night, was won by Eric by four and two, displaying an excellent short game in difficult conditions to win the Cormack Cup 2011.
