JOHN Young (10) made a welcome return to form by winning the Stableford played at Wick Golf Club on Sunday with a score of 38 points, a fine effort in the conditions.

Young played excellent golf to score 20 points on the front nine and playing into the wind on the back nine did well to score 18 points despite a no-score at the 11th hole.

Wick’s best player, Ron Taylor (+1), was second with 37 points, going round in a superb two-under-par 67. Taylor had a terrific start with birdies at the first and second holes to go out in one-under-par 34 and started back with a birdie at the 10th to come back in one-under-par 33.

Mister consistency David Samuel (9) was third with 34 points. Samuel played well to score 19 points on the way out, which included a run of three net birdies from the fifth to the seventh, but struggled in the wind on the inward half scoring only 15 points, with a no-score at the 18th hole.

Andy Simpson (7) was fourth with 33 points beating veteran Ron Barker (6) on a better inward half.

Simpson scored 15 points on the front nine and was the only leading player to score more points on the back nine with 18, which included a nett eagle at the 15th.

Barker scored 18 points on the way out and 15 points on the way in and would be disappointed with a no-score on the 17th hole.

Wick’s major open competition of the season, the Old Pulteney Open, is being played on Saturday and Sunday.

There are separate competitions on both days with overall scratch and handicap trophies for the players having the best scores over the two rounds.

The tee will be reserved from 7.30am to noon both days with last tee-off on Sunday being 3pm, as the prize-giving is scheduled to start at 7pm.
