With Halkirk "1" idle this week, Halkirk "2" and the Weigh Inn had the ideal opportunity to join them at the top of the Thurso and District Pool League when they went head to head in Halkirk.

Halkirk "2" struck first through Gavin Swanson in the opening singles match against Robbie MacGregor.

MacGregor, who had to leave early, then played the first doubles straight after and he subsequently levelled the match with a well-taken finish. The next two singles were shared leaving the match tied at 2-2.

Weigh Inn then took a stranglehold on the match with Alan Robertson and Peter MacAllister winning the next two singles. It was left to Weigh Inn captain Mark Alexander to clinch the match with a hard-fought win against Russell Bain.

The final score then read 6-3 to the Weigh Inn and they leapfrogged Halkirk "2" in the table.

In Top Joe’s, Comm were looking to bounce back from last week’s heavy defeat to Halkirk "1".

Top Joe’s raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to wins for Stevie Gray, Andy MacGregor and Rory Hadden. Davie Bain pulled one back for the Comm before Alan Mackenzie increased Top Joe’s lead to 4-1. The final singles saw a father-versus-son match as Jordan Youngson squared up against his dad, Scott. Jordan prevailed to keep the Comm’s hopes alive and reduce the leeway to 4-2.

The first doubles saw Top Joe’s clinch the match when Gray and Hadden were victorious over Stevie Morris and Jamie Simpson. Top Joe’s then went on to record a 7-2 win by securing the final two doubles.

Popeye’s, looking for their first win of the season, visited an in-form Holborn side.

After the first two singles were shared, Scott Swanson put Popeye’s ahead. Then there was no looking back for the Scrabster boys. They won the remainder of the singles to secure a winning 5-1 lead. They rounded out the match by winning two of the doubles games for a comfortable 7-2 win.

In the final match in week four, the Weigh Inn was the venue as two teams squared up with Ashes Bar hosting Skinandi’s, both looking for their first win. Surprisingly it turned out to be a rather one-sided affair as Skinandi’s registered their first victory with a 7-2 triumph.

Results – Halkirk "2" 3, Weigh Inn 6; Top Joe’s 7, Comm 2; Holborn 2, Popeye’s 7; Ashes Bar 2, Skinandi’s 7.

Next week last year’s top two go head to head for the first time this year with Halkirk "1" hosting champions Top Joe’s.

Other games will see Halkirk "2" travel to face Skinandi’s, Holborn visit the Comm and Popeye’s entertain Ashes Bar. Weigh Inn have the bye week.
