We need to start taking points from teams around us, says Wick striker Gordon MacNab
Gordon MacNab is well aware that Wick Academy need to start picking up points from teams around them in the Highland League table – starting with this weekend’s encounter against Turriff United.
MacNab forced in a late goal against Huntly at Harmsworth Park on Saturday but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Scorries slipping to a seventh consecutive home defeat.
The Black-and-Golds moved up to sixth in the table after their 2-1 victory thanks to a double from their prolific frontman Angus Grant.
The Scorries, who remain 15th, have lost their last five games in all competitions and haven’t picked up any points at home since August 7.
MacNab (30) said: “I felt that we went out full of energy, we battled hard, we worked hard, things were going well defensively. But week in, week out, we’re conceding from cross balls and it happened again today.
“I don’t know if we did enough going forward. I think we certainly matched them.
“It’s frustrating because we’re playing good football. I don’t know what the answer is – I guess we’ve just got to keep trying hard, keep working hard, and hopefully things will turn.”
MacNab hopes Academy can replicate the strong form they showed after the turn of the year in the last campaign.
“This time last year we were sitting in pretty much the exact same position and we managed to creep up a little bit, so that’s all we can hope for,” he said.
“Results are what matter at the end of the day – it’s points on the board that we’re needing.
“I don’t think we’re a side that should be as low down as we are. Other teams recognise that we’re a good side.
“Sometimes it doesn’t go our way when we try to go man-for-man and go at teams that are at the top end of the table. But a lot of times we’ve gone out and competed well – maybe we’ve not got the result we wanted, but we have certainly given them a game to think about.
“It’s just teams round about us we need to start taking points from. But there are no easy games in the Highland League now. Every game is tough, especially when you’re not winning.
“Obviously we’ve not won in a while and it’s going to be tough to turn things around, but I’m sure once we do we’ll kick on.”
