Ashes Bar were hammered 8-1 by Halkirk 1.

HALKIRK "1" entertained Holborn in week 13 action having taken a two-point lead at the top of the Thurso and District Pool League following another victory at home to Ashes Bar last Thursday in a rearranged fixture.

The villagers managed to register their second 8-1 mauling of Ashes Bar in the space of three days with only Graeme Lowe preventing the whitewash.

Holborn got off to the worst possible start as Halkirk "1" raced into a 4-0 lead thanks to wins for Michael MacGregor, Keith Foubister, Jim Sutherland and Stevie Elder. They did manage to win the fifth singles to keep the match alive only for Mark MacDonald to clinch it for Halkirk "1" in the sixth singles.

Holborn improved in the doubles by taking two of the three available, to leave the final score 6-3.

Second-placed Weigh Inn hosted Skinandi’s, looking to notch up their 10th win of the season before heading into their bye week. Robbie MacGregor got Weigh Inn off to the perfect start producing a good finish after an excellent yellow enabled him to clear up.

A close second game was edged by John Saddler to put the Weigh Inn 2-0 up. A good break was the key to Mark Alexander winning the third singles as he took a couple of visits to notch the win.

The fourth singles was a close affair with David McGillivray finally winning to give Weigh Inn a commanding 4-0 lead. A long fifth game ensued and Alan Robertson emerged victorious over Andy Crawford to give Weigh Inn the match with a 5-0 lead. Stevie Wylie gave Weigh Inn a clean sweep of the singles, winning a tight game against Rian MacGregor.

Skinandi’s managed to regain some pride by taking two games to leave the final score 7-2 for the Weigh Inn.

Having suffered two heavy defeats at the hands of Halkirk "1", Ashes Bar were out to make amends when they visited the Comm. It didn’t start well for the visitors as Richard MacDonald defeated Johnty Macleod.

However, Ashes Bar then responded with Marc Cannop and Graham Young giving them a 2-1 advantage. The next two singles also went the way of the visitors to put them just one game away from victory.

It was then left to Lowe, who has been one of the top performers for Ashes Bar this season, to clinch the match with victory over Stevie Morris. Ashes Bar then won the first doubles through Young and Cannop for a 6-1 lead, leaving Comm with the consolation of taking the last two doubles.

In the final match, Halkirk "2" were trying to put an end to their recent poor run of form when they made the trip to Scrabster to face Popeye’s. It was to be another long night for Halkirk "2" as Popeye’s ran out easy 7-2 winners against a depleted Halkirk "2" side.

Top Joe’s had the bye this week.

Week 13 results – Halkirk "1" 6, Holborn 3; Weigh Inn 7, Skinandi’s 2; Comm 3, Ashes Bar 6; Popeye’s 7, Halkirk "2" 2.

Elsewhere, Holborn host the Comm; Skinandi’s travel to play Halkirk "2", and Popeye’s make the short trip to the Weigh Inn to face Ashes Bar. Weigh Inn have the bye week.
