A GOLF team made up of students from North Highland College has come top of the Scottish Student Sports/BUCS winter league following an away win against Robert Gordon’s University at Craibstone Golf Club.

The University of the Highlands & Islands team, comprising BA (Hons) Golf Management students at North Highland College in Dornoch, has remained unbeaten, winning five ties and notching up a draw against Dundee University.

UHI had a strong start to their season with wins over the University of Abertay, Heriot-Watt University, Glasgow University and St Andrew’s 2nd.

The turnaround for the team came against Dundee who had at that point also won all their matches. Dundee were 4-2 up but Callum McNeill and Steven Kinnaird, representing UHI, came back with wins to gain the draw.

UHI won their final match, away against RGU, on Sunday, November 27. Charlie Hickling, as the first of the eight-man squad playing against RGU, was five down after five holes. He then won seven of the next 12 holes and came back to win two and one.

The team went on to win five and three.

Alex Shedden, team captain, gave special mention to Callum McNeill, who won all his matches, and Steven Kinnaird, with one narrow defeat. Both players are new to the team and performed to their best in every match.

Shedden also had only one narrow defeat out of his four matches to match Kinnaird’s performance.

Alan Fleming, lecturer, PGA professional and team coach, said. “This is a strong squad with great team spirit. The students all play and practice regularly on the Struie Course at Royal Dornoch Golf Club as part of their programme of study as well as for recreation and competition.

“This helps them develop a good level of consistency and competitive spirit amongst themselves.”

The league victory gains UHI promotion to the top division of Scottish Universities Golf as well as qualification for the British level of competition

Meanwhile, the first covering of snow at links level put paid to the North Golf Alliance fixture at Tain last Sunday. The fixture has been rescheduled for this weekend with the same starting times applying.
