U13 badminton championships see Sophie and Liam achieve treble

The second of the Caithness Junior Badminton Championships, this time for the under-13 age group, took place on Sunday in the East of Caithness Community Facility.

A total of 24 players competed – 13 girls and 11 boys – with Sophie Mackay and Liam Sinclair both achieving the treble.

The championships were sponsored by Highland Workwear.

The first semi-finals in the main draw of the girls’ singles saw Dunnet’s Myah Macleod take on Wick’s Emily Mackenzie, with Myah winning 15-5, 15-5.

The second semi saw Sophie Mackay (Dunnet) get the better of Wick’s Sophie Sinclair 15-7, 15-6. Sophie won the all-Dunnet final 15-9, 15-5.

The consolation semi saw Dunnet’s April Steven take on Wick’s Kenzie Sinclair, with April winning 10-15, 15-11, 16-14.

In the boys’ singles, the first of the main draw semi-finals saw Wick’s Jack Angus getting the better of Ormlie’s Pátraic O’Prey by 15-8, 15-11.

The second semi was between the under-11s boys’ singles winner Liam Sinclair and runner-up Finlay Nicolson, with Liam winning 15-4, 15-5.

Liam went on to beat Jack 15-7, 15-5 in the final.

Lachlan Forbes (Ormlie) defeated Jack Bain (Wick) 15-7, 13-15, 15-10 in the consolation final .

The first semi-final in the main draw in level doubles saw Dunnet duo Sophie Mackay and Myah Macleod play clubmates April Steven and D’arcey Taylor, with Sophie and Myah progressing 15-3, 15-1.

In the second semi, Wick’s Kelsey Dunn and Kenzie Sinclair took on Emily Mackenzie (Wick) and Dunnet’s Lexie Mackenzie, with Emily and Lexie progressing 15-8, 15-3.

Sophie and Myah were victorious in the final, 15-5, 15-8.

The consolation final was between Hania Sandecka and Iona Warren and Lily Gunn and Emilia Sutherland, both pairings being from Wick. Hania and Iona won 13-15, 15-13, 15-5.

The boys played a round-robin. Liam Sinclair and Finlay Nicolson (both Wick) won all their games, dropping only 30 points over the eight sets to 15.

Runners-up were Ormlie’s Jack Sinclair and Lachlan Forbes, who were successful in three of their four matches.

Consolation winners were Pátraic O’Prey (Ormlie) and Jamie Rathie (Dunnet).

The mixed followed the same format as the singles.

The first semi-final in the main draw had Liam Sinclair and Sophie Mackay up against Pátraic O’Prey and Myah Macleod, with Liam and Sophie going through 15-0, 15-8.

In the second semi Jamie Rathie and D’arcey Taylor lost out to Emily Mackenzie and Jack Angus, 16-14, 15-8.

Liam and Sophie won 15-5, 15-2 in the final.

Cousins April and Lewis Steven won 15-13, 15-11 against Jack Sinclair and Kelsey Dunn in the consolation final.

Kerry Mackenzie of Caithness Junior Badminton Club said: “Once again a huge well done to all the competitors and thank you to all the helpers.

“There were some fantastic games and rallies, with all competitors showing good sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

“A massive thanks to Highland Workwear for sponsoring this event.”

This Saturday sees the U15 championships, with the U17s on Sunday, both in the East Caithness Community Facility.
