Two-stroke victory for Bain in McRobert Thistle Trophy
Saturday saw the men’s section at Reay competing for the McRobert Thistle Trophy, with some fine scores recorded.
A fantastic round of 72 for nett 64 saw Andy Bain bag the trophy. Matching halves of 36, which included a brace of birdies at the 14th and 15th, were good enough to secure a two-stroke victory.
A hat-trick of birdies at the fourth, 11th and 16th helped John Nicolson to second place after a fine round of 76 for nett 66.
Halves of 40 and 44 helped Bruce Mackay to a score of nett 67 and third place. Willie Steven finished a stroke further back on nett 68 after a round of 80, while Pete McCartney took fifth place on nett 69.
The women were competing in a three-team Texas Scramble which saw some low scoring. Pauline Craig, Pam Garbe and Rosalind McQuaker topped the standings after an impressive round of 77 gave them a score of nett 69.
Su Hawes, Patsy Mackay and Nicola Campbell finished second on nett 63 after a strong round of 85. Heather Campbell, Julie Minchin and Helen Gisbey completed the podium places after a fine round of 87 for nett 65.
The final round of the Winter League Stableford competition was played on Sunday, and a round of 85 was good enough to give Donald Bain the win on the day on 33 points.
A steady performance saw Ali Simpson take second place on countback after he also finished on 33. A birdie at the final hole helped Jimmy Meiklejohn to third place on 32.
In the overall standings Jack Johnstone was crowned the Winter League champion on an impressive six-round aggregate score of 226.
A late surge by Ronald Mathieson over the closing rounds saw him finish a point adrift of the winner on 225. Jimmy Meiklejohn took third place overall on 215.
In the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford action, a fine round of 78 gave Alex Anderson a winning score of 39 points. Willie Williamson, Sandy Chisholm and Bill Watson were next best after all finishing on 36, with a birdie at the fifth helping Chisholm to his score.
This Saturday sees the traditional summer season opener as Carol Paterson’s charges will take on a team led by Steve Efemey in the Captain versus Vice Captain match.
On Sunday the men will be competing for the Ward Trophy and the High Handicap Trophy.
