THERE was a turnout of over 40 for the ladies’ Thurso Open at Thurso on Saturday.

The sponsors, A. Mackay & Son (fishmongers) and Bews Butchers, arranged a fine day for the ladies with the rain stopping just before tee-off. A relatively strong wind, however, made scoring tricky.

The scratch trophy went to Eleanor Tunn (Reay) with a 78, who beat Laura Durrand by one shot. In the handicap, Doreen Cormack (Wick) took first place with a nett 69.

The better inward half was required to separate second and third. Alice Fidler prevailed after tying with Hanna McLean (Wick) on 71.

Libby Wilson (Wick) was fourth with 72, one shot ahead of Lorna MacMillan (Lybster). Suzee McClennaghan was best amongst the 36-handicappers with Joy Fraser second.

Thurso beginners had their own competition and Jean Sutherland came out on top with Sarah Meiklejohn runner-up.

The prize for the longest drive on the second hole in the silver division went to Durrand with McClennaghan taking the honours in the bronze section. Tunn picked up the prize for the nearest the pin on the 14th hole.

The Sandra Proudler Trophy for best club over the ladies’ opens was won by Wick with Thurso as runners-up.

The seniors had a fine day for round eight of the EGGS Summer Eclectic on Tuesday but scoring was generally modest apart from the top four.

A week without golf would appear to have done Dave Lyall no harm as he was a clear winner with 40 points. His first nine yielded 21 points but he had to dig in for 19 more on the inward nine that contained a couple of single-point holes.

Countback was needed to sort out second place. Ronnie Gray and Alan Simmonite both scored 37 points and it was Gray who prevailed with 19 points coming in compared to 17 by Simmonite. Both players had blanks on the outward nine but Gray’s four pars to open his back nine proved decisive. Simmonite did particularly well at the par threes with pars at four out of the five. Bob Robertson, with birdies at the sixth and eighth holes, was next best on 35 points.

The ladies played for the Three Club Goblet on Tuesday evening. With the nights drawing in the competition was played over 15 holes.

First place went to Jane Grant with 54 shots. Isabel Kirkpatrick came in second three shots

behind.
