A LAST-minute change of tactics from Wick boss Tom McKenna sowed the seeds of Fraserburgh’s downfall.

McKenna ripped up his original master plan and implemented another, seeing that this might be the type of game for four-goal hero Steven Anderson to terrorise Broch’s defence.

He said: “I was going to go 4-4-2 today but at the last minute, I decided to go 4-3-3 and thought we’d throw Dave [Allan] and Ando up front today.

“Ando has loads of pace and can compete for balls for you – he got his just rewards.

“Ando did well today. I’ve been shouting his name from the touchline a lot these last few games and he gave me four replies today.

“I liked his fourth as he followed my instruction to close their keeper down and he was rewarded for it.

“I’m overjoyed – the lads worked hard. They put one hell of a shift in when you consider that over the piece, Fraserburgh had more of the ball.

“We’ve got a passion and a desire at the moment and they don’t want to get beat – I think that shone through today.

“I’ve been saying this for a while. The way we were playing, someone was going to get one hell of a battering and today that happened.

“Fraserburgh are a very good football team and their position in the league tells you that. But for the lads to beat them 4-0 was something special.

“Our back five has been outstanding. They’ve got a togetherness – they throw their bodies on the line, they’re brave and they don’t want to concede goals.

“It gives you a platform to go and play on and it’s been them that has kept us in games during this good period of form for us.

“There’s a lot of demand on the players playing all these big teams and doing well against them.”

Meanwhile, Fraserburgh boss Mark Cowie criticised his players for not stepping up to the mark that Wick had set them.

He said: “We were poor today. It’s been a long season and maybe it’s caught up with us.

“We had the majority of the ball but Wick were deadlier on the break and scored four goals – so no complaints about the result.

“Wick got themselves into the position that they did with their excellent defending – they recently got a clean sheet against one of the top scoring teams in the league so they’re doing something right.

“Every one of those goals was probably avoidable but we need the characters in the team to stand up and be counted.”
