THURSO Bowling Club’s ladies’ triple of Jillian Tewnion, Janet Sinclair and Lorna McDermid saw their hopes of lifting the national title dashed on Sunday when they lost out at the semi-final stages in Ayr.

The week started well when they defeated Polton from East Lothian 15-11 and then beat Townend 23-11. The quarter-final was a tough affair but the Thurso girls pulled through against Edinburgh north-east representatives Craigentinny 16-14.

The semi-final pitted Thurso against their fourth Edinburgh side, Watson Memorial from West Lothian. This was to prove a difficult tie for the Thurso three and they were beat 19-4 with their victors going on to lift the title of National Triples Champions when they overcame Carmyle in the final.

Saturday, meanwhile, saw Thurso hold its single sets competition sponsored by Doosan Babcock and there was an entry of 20 players taking to the green.

The first round saw two of the form players take an early bath with Roddy Farmer taking care of Ronnie Bain and Keith Boden accounting for John Harris.

Keith progressed to the semi-finals where he faced Nigel Gower, who had earlier seen off the challenge of Ronnie Bain jnr in the quarter-finals.

After the first set was tied 6-6, Nigel took the second with a four on the penultimate end to book his place in the final.

Meeting Nigel there was Marjory McDermid who came through a tight semi-final with Peter Knapp.

In the final Nigel took control, winning the first set 8-2, but Marjory persevered and kept the second set close – the scores were locked at 3-3 with an end to play. But she failed to get the shot she needed to force a tie-break and Nigel prevailed to become the singles sets champion.

Tomorrow sees the club hold the Construction Cup triples and on Sunday Thurso play host to the Inverness Bowling Club in the semi-final of the District Top Ten Championship and, with home advantage this time around, Thurso will be hoping to gain revenge after losing out in last year’s final.

To complete a busy week, the Thurso Gala Week pairs will be played for from Tuesday night onward.
