After a difficult 2020 for everyone, Thurso Bowling Club has opened for the 2021 season.

New president Brian Cormack along with the ladies' and gents' captains, Julie Knapp and Henny Henderson, say they are overjoyed to see members back on the green.

There are rules and regulations to be observed but the overall atmosphere at the club is very positive, with everyone happy to be playing again.

While 2021 will not be the same as previous seasons with opens, district and county games, most Saturdays there are club competitions. The club has an online rink booking system that is working well and the usual Monday, Thursday and Friday helter-skelters have made a welcome return for many members.

Bar manager Douglas Morrison is taking table bookings from members and providing table service on a Friday evening and all day Saturday.

Saturday competitions began on June 19 with the Andy Campbell Mixed Rinks. The winners were Douglas Morrison, John McGill, Kay Rosie and Joan Elder, and runners-up were Brian Cormack, Charles Smith, Joan Bridge and Alan Doull.

June 26 saw the Club Pairs, with an all-female team of Lorna Cormack and Fiona Macleod beating the lads Alec Mackay and John McGill.

July 3 was Highland Triples day with the winners being Douglas Morrison, Henny Henderson and Julie Knapp. Runners-up were Liz Rhodes playing with father and daughter Allan and Lynne Swanson.

The 2x4x2 Pairs took place on July 10. This competition saw Henny Henderson emerge victorious again with his partner Liz Rhodes, beating Stephen Rollinson and Ali Gray.

Could Henny make it three in a row on July 17? Sadly for him, no – his winning run came to an end in the quarter-finals of the Singles Sets, losing out to Allan Swanson.

Allan went on to make the final against Lorna Cormack. Both played excellent bowls, winning one set each.

The tiebreak saw Allan leading by two shots to one going into the third and final end but Lorna dug in and produced a hat-trick of bowls, winning by four shots to two.

This Saturday (July 24) is Construction Triples day.
