Willie Shearer has won two of the five rounds in the EGGS summer eclectic.

ONLY five rounds of the EGGS Summer Eclectic at Thurso Golf Club have been played and Willie “WJ” Shearer has won two of them after Tuesday’s scores were analysed.

Shearer had 39 points, as had Ronald Mackay, with Shearer coming out on top after countback.

Shearer had 20 points for his outward nine with steady play but his back nine of 19 points was more remarkable as he scored blanks at two holes but pars at six of the other seven to earn victory.

Mackay played well with a birdie at the eighth in an outward nine of 21 points. An unfortunate double bogey at the penultimate hole was to prove costly, however.

Ian Manson had a couple of birdies in his 37-point effort, a total shared with Jack Johnstone who continues to impress in this competition. Doug McCowan and Bob Black were next best with 36 points.

There were a couple of significant moves on the eclectic leader board with Donald Jack improving by three shots to nett 62 and Jim Telfer by one more to take over as leader on nett 59.5.

Pat Valentine joined Sandy Reid in third place on nett 63 while previous leader Johnstone actually went up by half a shot courtesy of a one-shot handicap cut.

Last, but by no means least, it is a great pleasure to report a hole in one by Ivan Paterson. Playing with Frances Allan and George Todd, Paterson aced the fifth hole using a five wood. His only regret was that was unable to see the ball going into the hole.

Also on Tuesday, the ladies played their August Monthly Medal.

The rain was heavy after lunch time so early starters had the best of the conditions.

Winner with a nett 74 was Jean Clasper. Nadia Green was second two shots further back.
