NORTH Highland Harriers recently hosted 10k and 3k races as part of the Thurso Gala celebrations.

The 10k race took place from Thurso, round the Janetstown loop and back into the town, finishing at the riverside.

The 3k race, meanwhile, saw 10 juniors completing two loops of the riverside which gave spectators a good view of the action unfolding.

The latter event may have been short on numbers but it was high on quality with the boys’ race being won by 14-year-old Tim Ridgley and the girls’ competition by 12-year-old Rhiannon Kirk.

Forty seniors took part in the 10k along a hilly course. It was a close race at the front of the field with only 24 seconds separating the first two runners as they crossed the finish line. Mark Taylor, from Thurso, took the honours in a time of 37.35 min, with Austin Hughes second in 37.59 min and Stuart Anderson third in 40.23 min.

In the women’s race the accolades went to Wick runner Joan Hendry who finished in 41.16 min, taking sixth place overall.

The runner-up spot went to Diane Rodgers in 43.21 min and third, in 45.22 min, was Sharon McCafferty.

All runners were home in under 72 minutes which, for a 10k, is a very good standard.

Prizes were presented to the winners by NHH secretary Colin Earnshaw and thanks were given to the marshals and officials who helped out, the NHH caterers for refreshments, and the youth club for the use of its premises.
