Harper’s Bar was the venue for the first action of season 2019/20 for Wick and District Darts League.

A reasonable turnout saw some impressive darts being thrown. Ten maximums were hit along with five ton-plus checkouts.

In the ladies’ competition Karen Burke Memorial Trophy there was a first win for Queen’s player Alison Tait, who defeated her team-mate Kara Sutherland 3-1 in the final. Alison beat her mum and hot favourite Freda Perry 3-2 in the semis, while Kara defeated Meganne Shearer 3-0 in the other semi-final.

Losing quarter-finalists were Sammy Troy, Trish Mackay, Liz Ronaldson, and Janet Banks.

Freda Perry hit the highest scores with two 140s.

In the men’s competition for the Willie Keith Memorial Trophy, Kevin Macgregor found himself 0-2 down in his first-round encounter against Queen’s youngster Jack Duncan but his experience pulled him out of a difficult situation.

Kevin beat Billy Davidson, who had been in scintillating form, to lift the trophy.

Before the start of Wick and District Darts League's new season, Ronnie Plowman (left) was presented with a lifetime award for his dedication to the sport. The presentation was made by Martin Nicolson. Ronnie has been playing darts for 40 years, having begun as part of the Nethercliffe team. He now plays for Seaforth Club. Cath Begg, of Keiss, received a similar award, but she was not present to receive her trophy. Picture: Robert MacDonald / Northern Studios
