THE first winter medal of the season was played at Wick. A strong south-easterly made scoring difficult over the last nine holes which were into the wind.

Despite the conditions there were some excellent scores with Martin Sutherland (14) producing the round of the day – a magnificent nett 63, some six shots below the CSS of 69 – to win the competition by two strokes from George Calder (13).

Sutherland played steady golf to reach the turn in 40 followed by a disappointing double bogey at the 10th, but then exploded over the last eight holes which he covered in one over par, including a birdie at the 16th hole, to come back in 37.

Calder played exceptionally well over the first six holes. He covered them in one under par with birdies at the third and sixth to go out in 38, and then played solid golf into the wind to come back in 40 for a nett 65, which on another day would have won.

Third was young Gary Davidson (11) with a nett 68. He has had a great season taking his handicap down by seven strokes and he continued this fine form going out in 39 and coming back in 40 with a birdie at the 11th.

Captain Ian Thomson (5) was fourth with a nett 70. He played steady golf to go out in 38 and performed well into the wind to come back in 37 with a birdie at the 14th hole. But he was disappointed to finish with a double bogey.

Other scores worthy of mention came from Farquhar MacGregor (15) and Peter Taylor (11) with nett 71s, followed by Keith Gowens (12) with a nett 72.

The winter competitions continue with a Stableford which is being played on Sunday.
