Euan Sutherland blazed round the outward nine holes in 25 Stableford points. He even had the luxury of not scoring on the last hole to return a winning total of 31.

Tied for second on 30 were Ronnie Gray and W. J. Shearer, with the former getting the verdict on countback. Next best, all with 27, were Andy Macgregor, Ali Simpson and Jimmy Meiklejohn.

The final round of the Newsbeat Summer League was played on Saturday.

Steve Spargo played excellent golf, with a birdie at the long par five fourth, to post a winning total of 36 Stableford points.

Close on his heels were Pat Valentine, Ronnie Gray and Stanley Ross with 35. Ross had the best first half of the three with 20 points before dropping a succession of shots on the back nine. Valentine’s inward half of 17 points was good enough for second spot due to the better inward half.

Willie Inrig had four no score holes to be next best with 34, one better than Michael Macgregor, Donald Gordon and Nicky Doherty.

The final of the EGGs knockout competition for the Bruce Shield was played between Paul Giggle and Jim Buchan. Giggle got off to a flier, being four up after five holes.

But Buchan is used to the long haul, having had to go to extra holes to secure victory in his quarter and semi-final ties. He squared the match at the 15th before winning on the 17th.

Only two brave or misguided soles played on Tuesday in the EGGs eclectic in atrocious conditions. Bob Black with 30 points was ahead of his playing partner John Morrison by three points, in a remarkable feat of endurance.

On the Wednesday, the junior golfers had their final night when a junior/senior competition was played over five holes. Junior convener Laura Durrand teamed up with Ellen Traquair to win by one shot from Alan Simmonite and Cameron Reid. Third place went to the brother and sister pairing of Laura and Liam Bain.
