The Scottish National Surfing Championships 2021got off to a start at Thurso East today with the local club being well represented.

Event organiser Tamara Hicks said: "It is going really well despite a slight technical hitch this morning. We have made really good headway on the heats today – it is going brilliant."

She added that she had high hopes for the members of the Thurso-based North Shore Surf Club (NSSC).

Conditions on the shore at Thurso East were quite windy but this failed to dampen the competitors' spirits. The last few heats were going ahead while there was still enough daylight.

Hopefully, if weather permits, the finals will go ahead tomorrow (Saturday). The prize giving is set to go ahead on Sunday.

On Thursday night a welcome was help for the surfers at the Pentland Hotel, Thurso, while tomorrow night they will be able to enjoy the Thurso Rotary Club fireworks and bonfire at the esplanade, starting at 6.45pm, followed by a social night at the Pentland.

A number of local businesses have sponsored the event and the Thurso Community Café is providing packed lunches for the event officials on each competition day.

A link to the live scores can be found on the Scottish Surfing Federation Facebook page.
