THE third Winter Stableford was played at Wick Golf Club last Sunday. The course was in good condition and this resulted in low scoring with seven players out of 34 scoring 36 points or better.

John Hunter (4) continued his good run to win the competition with 40 points, which equates to a nett 65 – a superb effort.

He played super golf to reach the turn in two-under-par 33 to score 22 points, with birdies at the first and fifth holes. But like nearly every competitor, he found scoring difficult heading back into the wind and played well to come home in two-over-par 36 to score 18 points.

Senior member Jocky Durrand (14) was second with 39 points. He got off to a flying start with a birdie at the first followed by another at the sixth and reached the turn in 38 for 22 points. He played fine golf into the wind to come back in 42, scoring 17 points.

Next with 38 points were Elliot Cormack (10) and Ricky Shearer (19). Cormack amassed 19 points on the front nine which included three nett birdies at the third, fifth and sixth and a no-score at the seventh. He came back in 38, scoring 19 points, with nett birdies at the 12th and 16th holes, the best inward points score of the day.

Shearer has been playing well in recent weeks and continued this fine form, scoring 21 points on the way out with nett birdies at the first, second, fourth and fifth holes, but could only manage one other nett birdie at the 11th hole to score 17 points on the way in.

Veterans Mike Morrice (13) and Farquhar MacGregor (15) claimed fifth and sixth spots, both scoring 37. Morrice went out in 38 to score 21 points with nett birdies at the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth holes and did well to score 16 points on the way back despite a no-score at the 12th.

MacGregor has been in sparkling form and continued this by going out in 39 with nett birdies at the first four holes followed by a nett birdie at the seventh to score 22 points. But he could only muster 15 points on the way in which included a no-score at the 13th.

Captain Ian Thomson (5) was next with 36 points.

There is no club competition this Sunday as the North Winter Alliance is being held at Wick with the tee reserved from 8am to noon.

The next club competition is a medal on Sunday, November 27.
