Successful outing for Wick swimmers at Inverness event
Ten pupils represented Wick High in the Highland region leg of a Scottish Schools Swimming Association event at the Aquadome in Inverness.
This is an annual contest in which swimmers who make the qualifying times can enter a maximum of two swims in the hope that they then meet the criteria for the finals to be held in January in East Kilbride.
The Wick pupils had a successful day, with many achieving not only personal best times but also medals.
Following health complications, Maisie Statham competed for the first time in over a year – taking home a gold in the over-17 female 200m breaststroke and a bronze in the over-17 female 100m breaststroke.
Jackson Lunn (S1), competing in the male 13/14 category, came away with gold in 100m butterfly and silver in 200m freestyle.
Alex Richard (S2) achieved a bronze medal for his efforts in the 200m freestyle and a silver for his 100m breaststroke.
From S3, competing in the male 15/16 category, Davie Swanson secured a silver in 100m back and gold in 200m breast. In the same category, Nebi Senguler won gold in both 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle.
Representing the females in the 15/16 category were Rona Taylor and Eva Robertson, both from S4. Rona took a bronze in the 200m individual medley, while Eva won gold in both 100m and 200m breaststroke.
In addition, Nebi and Eva achieved consideration times for progress to the Scottish schools’ final in January. Results will be published on December 10 in order to confirm if these will be qualification times.
Also in attendance on the day were Morven Begg, Eva Forbes (both S1) and Connor Carter (S2). Although they didn’t secure medals, they swam well and came away with personal best times.
Teacher Siony Mackintosh, one of those who accompanied the swimmers, said: “All pupils were a credit to the school and we are very proud of their achievements.”
