THE first of the county competitions for 2019 was held on the Lybster green on Sunday when two teams of triples from each of the four Caithness clubs battled it out to be crowned county triples champions.

An open draw to determine the first-round ties led to an unprecedented outcome with all four clubs' two teams being drawn to play each other.

Thus it was Rosebank (skip W Bremner) v Rosebank (skip D Banks), St Fergus (skip P Mackenzie) v St Fergus (skip A Mulraine), Lybster (skip G. Zindilis) v Lybster (skip I Price) and Thurso (skip S. Christie) v Thurso (skip A Swanson).

Rosebank (W Bremner) won by 16 shots to 10, while St Fergus (A Mulraine) were winners by 13 shots to 12 in a close game in which a two was required on the last end to go through and was duly delivered.

From left: Neil Mackintosh, Geordie More and winning skip 'Tam' Mulraine (St Fergus), Colin Mackintosh (county president, handing over the trophy), Paul McNeil, William Bremner (skip) and Kirsten Bremner (Rosebank).

Lybster (I Price) won by 18 shots to six, and Thurso (S Christie) progressed by 20 shots to nine.

In the semi-finals it was St Fergus v Lybster and Thurso v Rosebank.

The St Fergus team were always on top, particularly after getting seven shots at the third end due to a Lybster bowl being removed from the head by one of their own players.

The Wick team went on from there to triumph 20-6 and go into the final.

The other semi was much tighter affair requiring an extra end to settle the tie.

At the seventh end Thurso held a 9-6 lead but a five for Rosebank changed things to the extent that they were leading 15-10 at the 12th end. Thurso fought back with a three and two singles to take the game into the extra end where Rosebank picked up the single required to join St Fergus in the final.

The final was a much less dramatic affair with steady scoring from the St Fergus trio of G More (lead), N Mackintosh (second) and A “Tam” Mulraine (skip) taking them to the title by 16 shots to seven from the Rosebank trio of K Bremner (lead), P McNeil (second) and W Bremner (skip).
