Staxigoe and Pentland United were the top scorers among the Caithness clubs on first-round day in the Highland Amateur Cup, banging in 15 goals without reply between them.

Staxigoe were 8-0 winners against Swifts in Wick, while the Stabbies thumped Top Joe's 7-0 in Thurso as the top-flight sides proved too strong for their county league second division opponents.

Most of the damage was done in the first half at the Upper Bignold as Staxigoe eased to a 7-0 lead with a hat-trick by Alan Larnach, two for Martin Banks, one from Dave Manson and an own goal. Darren Sheppard got the only goal of the second half with another super strike.

"It was a good all-round performance, I thought," manager Colin Sinclair said. "A couple of early goals got us settled in well.

"It was 7-0 at half-time but fair play to Swifts, they organised themselves well for the second half. They kept a good shape and worked away well.

"We are now looking forward to a home tie against Lochbroom in the second round."

Lochbroom were 4-2 winners over John O'Groats.

Goals by Cameron Montgomery, James Murray, Innes Mackintosh and Owen Bain had Pentland United four up against Top Joe's inside the opening half-hour at Ormlie. Conor Trueman extended the lead early in the second period before Marc Macgregor weighed in with a double.

Pentland United, who have won the tournament a record eight times, will face Kirkwall Thorfinn at home in the second round.

Watten had an impressive 4-0 victory at home to Keiss with goals from Scott Macalpine, Conner Pattinson, Steven Hughes and Shane Honeyman. Watten's reward is a home tie against Iochdar Saints.
