WICK Academy have been given a boost with the news that striker Marc Macgregor is on the mend.

The hitman has missed the entire season due to a knee injury and fears were beginning to grow that a huge call on his football career might have to be made.

Macgregor was the club's top scorer last season as the Scorries finished seventh in the Highland League. His last appearance came in the final game of 2018/19, a 5-1 win at Fort William.

New joint manager Gary Manson was pleased to report this week that the centre-forward has now had a scan and has received the green light to train again.

"Marc is on the road to recovery," Manson said. "He finally had his scan and the results of that revealed a tear in a knee ligament.

"It has healed enough for him to return to light training. We are working on a rehabilitation programme for him but we will not be rushing him to a comeback.

"He has no need to return this season so we will be looking to assist his recovery and hopefully ensure that he is raring to go for next season.

"Another piece of good news on the injury front is that Ben Sinclair is also back with us and in light training."

Academy welcome Strathspey Thistle to Harmsworth Park on Saturday with all eyes on the weather forecast.

We were able to get a good chance to assess the squad.

A waterlogged pitch put paid to their home match against Rothes last weekend. It has been over a month since the Scorries last played a competitive match.

"I was in two minds about last Saturday's postponed fixture," Manson said. "It would have been nice for myself and Stewart [Ross, joint manager] to get our first game under our belts.

"But with hindsight, we'd only had a couple of training sessions with the boys since we took charge and the cancellation gave us the opportunity to have a few more with them.

"That way we were able to get a good chance to assess the squad and to get our ideas over to them.

"There is the worry of the players being a bit rusty as it has been so long since we last had a Highland League fixture.

"Having drafted in three of the under-17 squad, we were able to split the squad into two sets of teams and have an 11 v 11 match in training.

"I told them to treat it as a proper match and the boys did so. It was good to watch and it didn't get too heated.

"Hopefully it will have given them some good preparation for the Strathspey match.

"I know we've a good record against them but I'm not one to look back.

"However, we don't want them to improve upon their record against us as we're looking for a flying start ourselves."
