Four Caithness shooters – John Campbell and his daughter Sophie (both Halkirk), Peter Richard (Pentland) and David Bremner (Watten) – took part in the National Small-bore Rifle Association’s Scottish Open meeting in Aberdeen.

The weather made conditions tricky, but Sophie Campbell produced some consistent shooting throughout the weekend and won the Scottish junior championship. She also won the class ‘B’ aggregate for the weekend and came a creditable fourth in the ladies’ open competition.

Peter was runner-up in both the STS 100-yard Freuchie knockout competition, losing out by a single point, as well as the class X/A Any Sights competition.

Both John and Peter qualified for the Earl Haig Trophy final for the Scottish championship and came 11th and 13th respectively in a strong field of 20 finalists including a number of ex-Scottish and British shooting squad members. The title was won by Huntly’s Lenny Thomson, a regular visitor to Caithness for the county open shoot.
