The recent dry spell saw the course in magnificent condition on Saturday for the first open competition of the season at Thurso, sponsored by the Comm Bar, with 83 competitors vying for the trophy.

Chris Sinclair has found some form recently and he carried this through to win the competition.

Sinclair, playing off 24, got off to a steady start with a five at the tricky first hole. He reached the turn in 46, averting a near disaster at the eighth after a poor approach short and left into the greenside bunker.

The bunker shot was thinned through the back but he recovered with a six. After hitting two three irons at the 11th and getting up and down for par, this saw him hit a good run with a birdie putt at 13 from 50 feet the highlight.

A solid par at 18 after missing the birdie from 12 feet saw him home in 40 for a nett 62.

Jim Farquhar (handicap 22) also had a nett 62 after coming home in 40 to secure overall runner-up, having lost out on first by countback over nine holes.

Stuart Bell (21) continued his run of form with a nett 64, two ahead of Ian Farquhar (14) and Ben Gordon (7). George Bain (24) and Reay’s Bruce Mackay (16) finished on 68, with Keith Foubister (24), Gavin Gunn (8), Graeme Henderson (7), Brent Munro (5), John O’Brien (9) and David Irvine (23) all on 69. Peter Sangster from Newmachar had the lowest gross of the day with 70.

Sunday saw round three of the A&A Mackay Summer League. Steven MacDonald was the overall winner with 38 points, helped by birdies at eight and 11. Jim Telfer (18) was back to form with 37 points alongside Alan Sparling (33).

Gavin Souter (15) continued his recent form with 36 points with Steve Osbourne on the same tally.
