Silverware for Castletown primary duo at Scottish school championships

Two Caithness junior badminton squad members took silverware when they represented Castletown Primary School at the Scottish Schools Badminton Union (SSBU) Primary Championships in Glasgow.

Sophie Mackay topped her group, losing only four points over two games, placing her in the quarter-finals. D’Arcey Taylor also made the quarter-finals after coming second in her group, winning one and losing one of her games.

The girls then played each other in the quarter-finals of the main draw, with Sophie going through 21-2, 21-5. Sophie then won her semi-final against Lucie Sneddon (Lanarkshire) 21-7, 21-7.

Sophie played Anvita Awasthi from Peel Primary School in the final and it was a tough battle. Sophie won the first set 21-16, Anvita took the second 21-14 and Sophie clinched the third 21-18.

Sophie and D’Arcey made the main draw semi-finals in the girls’ doubles. They played Lucy Jackson and Freya Stobie, from Kinross Primary School, with Sophie and D’Arcey winning 21-9, 21-11.

In the final against Anaya Awasthi and Anvita Awasthi (Peel Primary School) the Castletown pair took the win to secure the doubles cup 21-13, 21-17.
