Rounds 17 and 18 of Thurso Golf Club's A&A Mackay-sponsored summer league were played last week with William Shearer featuring prominently on both occasions.

On Thursday, Shearer was the winner with 41 points after countback from John Owens and Graham Elder. Gordon Munro was fourth with 39 points, one ahead of Ben Gordon who had five birdies for 38 points.

Jim Sangster and Chris Sinclair also returned 38 points. A point further back were George Sanders, Willie Lipka, Michael Forbes, Brian Hutcheon, Alan Coghill, Ross Sutherland and Steve Osborne.

Round 18 was on Sunday and again Shearer had the best score of the day with 39 points but this time he was beaten to first place by Roddy Gray after countback.

Allan Mackenzie was third with 37 points, ahead of Keith Dreaves, Richie Shearer, Chris Williamson, Jim Sangster, Jimmy Florence and Paul Foulkes.

The highlight last week was on Saturday when 62 golfers played for the medal.

Jim Buchan, in his 89th year, beat his age with a gross 87 for a nett 66. Jim put many a younger golfer to shame as he played the last seven holes in three under his handicap to return a nett 66 and win the medal on countback.

Warren Gordon, who was taught by Jim as a junior, birdied the first, eighth, 10th and 16th as he had the lowest gross of the day with a 70 for a nett 66.

Darren Sinclair almost holed his tee shot at the third as he also returned a nett 66. Gary Calder started with six pars as he recorded a nett 67, one ahead of Alan Simmonite and Neil Rigg.

Mick Ross, Jim Telfer, Jordan Youngson and Lachie Sutherland all had nett 69.
