"A rub of green" is what's required to cure Wick Academy's blues, says Scorries boss Tom McKenna.

Academy went down to their third consecutive defeat when former player, Gordon McNab, popped up 11 minutes from time to condemn them to a 1-0 loss at Nairn County.

Sadly for McKenna's troops, it was yet another case of the team firing blanks as despite creating a number of chances, no one was on hand to stick them away.

Compared to Nairn who had little problem in tucking one away – and both Rothes and Huntly in previous weeks – sticking one or more in the back of the net does not appear to be a problem for other Highland League teams.

As stated by McKenna last week, someone else apart from Craig Gunn needs to step up to the plate for those rare days that the club's top-scorer isn't hitting the target.

He said: "As at Rothes the week before, we dominated large parts of the game and yet again we've nothing to show for it.

"We created a lot of chances but unfortunately we couldn't put any of them away.

"It was the same old story of late. A good display but we've come back home empty-handed.

"The performance was there, a high level of intensity was there and the attitude of the players was superb. We just lack one vital ingredient.

"We did concede one but before that we were defensively solid. We went from our usual 4-4-2 formation to 4-1-4-1 in order to be more compact and difficult to breakdown.

"Craig was playing as the lone striker but we had others joining him in support when we attacked.

A wee bit of luck in front of goal is definitely what we're needing right now

"I think it's going to take something daft like the ball hitting someone on the backside and flying back into the goal to trigger a goal-rush for us.

"Because a wee bit of luck in front of goal is definitely what we're needing right now – everything else about our style of play is there. We need to be more ruthless in front of goal."

What didn't help Wick's cause was Nairn's substitute goalkeeper James Kendall who replaced the injured Dylan MacLean in the first half and pulled off a stunning display.

McKenna added: "He did well to come off the bench and play as well as he did.

"The fact that he got the man of the match award at the end tells its own story about how the game went.

"Nairn themselves were more of an attacking threat after half-time but we still created chances ourselves."

Meanwhile, McKenna has ruled himself out of the vacant Inverurie Locos post following the shock departure of Neil Cooper from the Harlaw Park hotseat last weekend.

He added: "It was a surprise to hear that about Neil but no, I won't be throwing my hat in for that. I'm more than happy where I am with Wick Academy."
