SUNDAY saw Reay’s golfers compete for one of the oldest and finest trophies at the club – the Banks Medal.

A tricky wind and some squally showers made life difficult for competitors, and this was reflected in the winning score of nett 69.

Taking the glory on countback was Ian Ritchie after a fine round of 77.

His better inward half was just enough to edge out John O’Brien after he also posted a nett 69 following a confidence-boosting 76.

O’Brien has not enjoyed the best of seasons by his own high standards – but he looks to be hitting form at just the right time with a few important events on the horizon in the Caithness golfing

calendar.

Three players shared third place, two shots adrift of the winner, James Hawes, Sandy Chisholm and Murray McGlasson.

Tuesday night saw the penultimate round of the Jacobs Summer Cup and youngster Andrew Adamson looks to have delivered a decisive blow following a steady nett 69.

Going in to the final round he leads by four shots from his nearest challenger, Lee Parnell, who posted a disappointing nett 70 following an excellent start to his round.

Defending champion Gavin Sutherland lies in third, 10 shots adrift of the leader, and he will need to do something extraordinary to hold on to his title.

Winner on the night was Fred Groves following a splendid nett 66, with Sutherland second after a nett 68.

This weekend Reay hosts its annual Safari Open, sponsored for the first time by NDSL and JF Nuclear.

This unique team event always provides an exciting atmosphere and 14 teams will be attempting to knock current champions, The 3-Jab Monkeys, off their perch.

Late entries will be accepted by phoning Colin Munro on 07816 766789 until 5pm today for any teams of three or four wishing to enter.
