A record 34 golfers took part in the annual Mackays’ Golf Challenge at Wick Golf Club at the weekend, with the annual gathering of family and friends now in its 21st year.

This year two first-time players won trophies. Catherine Harris took the Bill Mackay Trophy for the best Stableford score over the five par-threes, while her nephew Jamie Main (Inverness) received the Craig Banks Cup for closest to the pin on the second.

The best Stableford score was by Sanders Harper (40 points), winning the John Mackay Cup. The Ramsay Mackay Shield for best team score was won by brothers Mark, Richard and David Macadie with their uncle Murray Mackay (Dingwall).

Danny Pottinger (Aberdeen) lifted the Kathleen Green Cup for best junior over 18 holes, and Callum McInnes (Brora) took the junior nine-hole trophy.

Longest drive on the seventh was again taken by Billy McEwan (Glasgow) and a new fun trophy introduced this year, Cristie’s Cleaver, was won by Aly Mackay for closest to the pin on the ninth.

Around 100 family and friends rounded off the evening with socialising and prize-giving at the Norseman Hotel.

Doug Mackay, who arranges the event, said: “It’s fantastic that this fun competition is supported by so many family and friends with some travelling from as far as Berlin, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen just for the weekend. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with everyone each year.”
