Reay Safari Trophy goes to Summer Tactics quartet
Saturday saw Reay hosting its annual Safari Open for teams of four players, with the best three nett scores counting towards the team tally.
A fantastic spread of prizes courtesy of the sponsorship of North Point Distillery ensured players were fully focused on performing at their best. A strong wind from the south-west presented a tough challenge on the links which were presented in tip-top condition by the greenkeeping team.
Despite the tough conditions, some excellent scores were recorded with two teams finishing tied at the top of the leaderboard on a score of 209.
After the numbers had been crunched the Summer Tactics quartet of Lee Parnell, Colin Paterson, Andrew Taylor and Steve Efemey took the coveted Safari Trophy, with an excellent round 73 for nett 67 from Paterson proving decisive.
The runners-up were the Gunning Fore It ensemble of Alistair Gunn, Bruce Mackay, Gavin Gunn and Wayne Mowat, with Mackay their top performer after a fine round of 85 for nett 68.
Completing the podium places were The Ball Washers composed of Sandy Sutherland, Stewart Ross and Alan Larnach of Wick and Kevin Cameron of Lybster, who finished on a tally of 210. Cameron fired a super round of 73 for nett 67 to win the sought-after Murray McGlasson Quaich for the best individual nett score on the day.
An excellent score of 93 for nett 69 from Alison Ross helped the Mumpy’s Mates team which also included Cammie Ross, David Mackay and Donald Mowat to fourth place after they also finished on a score of 210.
The Elite Fore of Andy Bain, Willie Steven, Michael Smith and James Howden fired a round of 75 for nett 68 to take fifth spot on 212.
In routine club business, Murdo Macdonald won the latest round of the North Point Distillery Senior Stableford competition with an excellent tally of 38 points following a round of 85.
A birdie at the 16th helped Alistair Gunn to second place on 37 points, a tally matched by Sandy Chisholm who managed a brace of birdies at the sixth and 15th. Malcolm Clasper and Willie Williamson were next best after both finished on 35.
The ladies’ Quinlan Trophy was won by Carole Cameron after a fine round of 92 for nett 68. Heather Campbell took second place ahead of Sarah Meiklejohn on countback after both finished on nett 71, with a great birdie at the seventh hole providing the highlight of Meiklejohn's round.
An excellent front nine helped Pauline Craig to fourth place after a round of 90 for nett 72.
In the penultimate round of the Abbott Risk Consulting Summer Cup, Rodney Grant secured the win on 35 Stableford points, ahead of Donald Mowat on 34 and Pete McCartney on 33. In the overall standings Ian Farquhar remains the man to beat on a six-round aggregate score of 220, with Leslie Malcolm his nearest pursuer on 214.
Summer Cup specialist Lee Parnell lies in third place on 210, with Tom Ross on 208 and Lee Malcolm on 207.
Saturday will see the ladies in action in the Stewart Rosebowl, while on Sunday the club hosts its annual Junior Open sponsored by J A Mackay and Eurest.
