Reay Golf Club retain Sandra Proudler Cup in 30th anniversary year after strong showing at Wick Open





Last Saturday was a successful day for Reay Golf Club’s ladies playing in the Wick Open as excellent scoring helped them to retain the Sandra Proudler Cup.

It was the 30th anniversary of the competition which sees the ladies from Wick, Thurso and Reay counting their best four player scores from each others’ Opens to determine the overall team winners.

Sterling performances from Sarah Meiklejohn, who won the first handicap prize on the day, Jacqui Greig and Heather Campbell helped to secure the trophy at Wick after a season of keen competition between the three clubs.

In standard club business Leslie Malcolm won the Sandside Challenge Trophy with an impressive score of 78 for nett 65.

A fine homeward half of 37, which included a birdie at the 16th, saw him clinch a four-shot victory.

Matching halves of 41 saw Willie Paton card a round of 82 for nett 69 and second place.

Malcolm Thomson had to settle for third place after a birdie at the long fourth hole helped him to a round of 81 for nett 70. A birdie at the fifth helped Arthur Paton to fourth place with a nett 71.

In the latest North Point Distillery Senior Stableford action Sandy Chisholm fired birdies at the fifth and 18th to take the win on an excellent 40 points.

A steady round of 81 gave the in-form David Mackay second place on 37 points. Fred Groves was another player on the birdie trail at the sixth and ninth holes on his way to securing third place on 36 points.

A trio of players, Hugh Millar, Jack Johnstone and Donald Mowat were next best after all finished on 34.

In the overall standings Sandy Chisholm consolidated his lead to reach an eight round aggregate score of 293, ahead of Pete McCartney on 285 and Jock Eunson on 282.

Meanwhile in round two of the Autumn Nine Hole series there was a repeat of round one with Pete McCartney sealing his second successive victory with a tally of 18 points.

A birdie at the 4th helped Willie Paton to second place on 17, with Mike Halliday and Arthur Paton next best on 16.

This weekend will see the ladies competing in their September Medal, with the gents playing in the Beinn Ratha Trophy.
