Reay Golf Club: Crucial birdie at 18th as Greig maintains recent fine form

Players were back in action at Reay this week with competitions for both the men’s and women’s sections.

In the latest round of the Abbott Risk Consulting Summer Cup, Stuart Greig maintained his recent fine form to top the standings with a good tally of 35 Stableford points in windy conditions. A round of 83, made up of halves of 43 and 40, included a crucial birdie at the 18th which sealed the win.

A birdie at the 14th helped Leslie Malcolm to take second place on countback ahead of Doug Mackenzie when both finished on 34 points after steady rounds.

Tom Ross finished fourth on 33 points, with a birdie at the sixth helping him to his tally. Gregor Munro was edged into fifth place on countback after he also finished on 33 points but he did have the consolation of firing two birdies, at the sixth and seventh.

In the overall Summer Cup standings, Ian Farquhar leads the way on a six-round aggregate score of 220, ahead of Leslie Malcolm on 214 and Lee Parnell on 210.

In the latest North Point Senior Stableford action, Malcolm Thomson took the win after a steady round of 81 gave him a score of 36 points. An excellent front nine of 39 which included a birdie at the sixth helped David R Craig to second place on 35.

A birdie at the fifth helped Hugh Millar to a matching score of 35 points and he took third place on countback. Sandy Chisholm and Pete McCartney were next best after both finished on 33.

In the overall standings Jock Eunson maintains a slender lead on an eight-round aggregate score of 282, ahead of Pete McCartney on 280 and Sandy Chisholm on 276.

In the women’s August Medal an impressive performance on the par-three holes was the cornerstone of a superb round of nett 63 for Joy Fraser which secured the silverware.

Birdies at the first and 13th helped Pauline Craig to an excellent round of 85 for nett 63 and second. A solid round of 91 for nett 69 gave Jacqui Greig third place, ahead of Alison Ross on nett 70 and Su Hawes on nett 71.

This weekend will see players competing in the Thurso Ladies’ Open and the Wick Men’s Open.
